Creative Ways To Promote Healthier Brushing Habits in Children
It’s important to start healthy brushing habits with your children at an early age. This will not only benefit them now, but it will set the stage for a lifetime of healthy habits and good oral hygiene. We understand that sometimes it’s not an easy task and children can resist. It’s important for children to brush their teeth 2 times a day, for at least 2 minutes, and then for an adult to follow up with another brush. Try out a few of these creative ideas and turn brushing into a fun habit. Your child will be one step closer to a lifetime of beautiful, healthy smiles!
Set A Good Example
Kids often take behavioral cues from their parents. Set a good example by showing them how you brush your teeth and how much fun you have doing it. Use exaggerated gestures to show children very clearly each critical step to the brushing process. At the end, flash your pearly whites to the mirror to check that you’ve done a good job.
Make it Fun
If your child feels forced to do something they may resist. Turn teeth brushing into a fun activity. Let them choose a favorite stuffed animal or doll to brush with them, time brushing with a song, or a story, or turn it into a contest and reward consistent good brushing, and most of all compliment them when they do a great job!
Get Messy
Kids love to make messes! When kids are brushing well, the toothpaste bubbles up and foams. The more foam, the better. Encourage kids to brush in a way that makes lots of bubbles. In this case, that can work for you.
Put Them In Charge
Take them shopping and let your children pick the color of their toothbrush and the flavor of their toothpaste. Giving kids a choice invests them in the process and makes them feel like they have some control and a role to play.
Start A Routine and Stick To It
You may be tempted to let your child skip brushing after a long day or during times when your normal schedule is off (like vacation), but keep at it. The more second nature brushing becomes the easier it will be to make sure your child is brushing twice a day for 2 minutes.
